Aldo Leopold Legacy Trail System
Sugar River State Trail
The Sugar River State Trail follows an abandoned railroad line in south central Wisconsin for 24 miles from New Glarus to Brodhead. A short access trail connects the Sugar River State Trail to New Glarus Woods State Park. Fourteen trestle bridges cross over the Sugar River and its tributaries, while the trail passes by farmlands, woods, rolling hills, scenic meadows, remnant prairies, and glacial topography. North of Brodhead, the trail goes over a replica covered bridge. The trail has also been designated as
a National Recreational Trail.
The Sugar River Trail headquarters is in the restored 1887 railroad depot in New Glarus. The building is on the National Registry of Historic Places and houses displays of local culture and railroad history.
Trail Activities
The Sugar River State Trail may bring a number of different users to the trail at the same time. It is important to use good trail etiquette to ensure the enjoyment and safety of all trail users.
The fairly level grade and smooth limestone and asphalt surfaces make this 24-mile trail suitable for bicyclists, walkers and joggers. The 1-mile section in New Glarus has been paved with asphalt suitable for in-line skating.
Anyone age 16 or older riding a bicycle or in-line skating must have
a Wisconsin State Trail Pass. Trail
passes must be purchased before using the trail and should be carried
with you while using the trail.
Pet owners, please be sure to have your pet on a leash, 8 feet or shorter, at all times. You must pick up after your pet.
The fairly level grade and smooth limestone and asphalt surfaces make most of this trail accessible to wheelchair users and others with mobility impairments.
Ice Age National Scenic Trail
The Sugar River State Trail, from Bump Road to Exeter Crossing Road,
is part of the Ice Age
National Scenic Trail. The Ice Age Trail winds for more than 1,000 miles through Wisconsin, along the terminal edge of the Wisconsin lobe of the last glacier to cover the state.
Winter Activities
Snowmobiles are allowed when there is over four inches of snow, or when the trail has a groomed base. At all other times the trail is closed to snowmobiling. Operators must follow all Wisconsin snowmobile laws, including traveling no more than 15 miles per hour within any of the village limits. For the most up to date conditions during winter, call the Green County Trail Information Line, (608) 527-2910.
The trail is open to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, however, the trail is not groomed, and skiers and snowshoers must share the trail with snowmobiles. Skiers do not need a trail pass while using the trail.
Camping
A short access trail connects the Sugar River State Trail to New Glarus Woods State Park where camping is available throughout the year. The access trail parallels State Highway 69 and then leads uphill to the park.
