Wyalusing State Park Conditions

Conditions as of Wednesday, September 8, 2010:

Camping

Due to the Volunteer Jamboree at Wyalusing State Park on Sunday and Monday, Sepember 12 and 13, there will be no electric sites available.
There will be plenty of nonelectric campsites. Generators are not allowed.

Wyalusing State Park has 22 first-come, first-served sites. We encouraged you to call before coming to check on the availability of these sites. We cannot hold or reserve first-come, first-served sites. Campers must be here in person to register for these sites and a unit must be set up on the site before 11 p.m. that night.

Showers, flush toilets and the dumping station are open for the season.

To reserve regular or outdoor group sites for dates May through October 31, 2010, use the Web or call (888) 947-2757, TTY (800) 274-7275.

Firewood Notice: Due to the potential of carrying harmful emerald ash borers [exit DNR], firewood from out of state or from more than 25 miles away is not allowed on Wisconsin State Park or Forest properties. Also, firewood that has been in the Wisconsin emerald ash borer quarantined area [PDF 102KB] is not allowed on properties outside of the quarantined area. Please buy firewood at or near the park or forest where you are going. Call the DNR toll-free Firewood Hotline, (877) 303-WOOD ((877) 303-9663) for information before packing for a trip. Even though parts of Vernon and Crawford counties are within the 50 mile radius, firewood from these two counties is not allowed in the park. Firewood may not be transported out of a quarantined area. This includes firewood purchased or originating from Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin (Crawford County).

Concessions

The concession stand is open daily. Hours for the concession are as follows: Monday-Thursday: 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.; Friday: 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday: 8 a.m. - 9 p.m.

Firewood, canoe and kayak rental, camp supplies, sweat shirts and T-shirts are available at the concession stand.

Events

Coming events for Wyalusing and all state parks and forests are listed on the DNR Events Calendar.

The Starsplitters of Wyalusing will present Astronomy Programs on the second and fourth Saturday evenings of each month beginning in May. Programs will be held at the Huser Astronomy Center and begin at 8:30 p.m.

Trails

Trails are in good hiking condition. Sugar Maple Nature Trail and Sand Cave Trail were both opened in 2009 after being closed for more than 2 years due to heavy rains. Both trails were redesigned and should be more sustainable in the event of heavy rain. Big Sand Cave, Little Sand Cave, and Walnut Eddy on the Wisconsin River are now visible from Sand Cave Trail.

Sentinel Ridge Trail is one of the most scenic trails at the park, an outstanding view of the confluence of the Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers can be seen from the Green Cloud Picnic Area and the Passenger Pigeon Monument.. It can be accessed from Point Lookout and follows the bluff all the way down to the Mississippi River (a drop of about 500 feet). Indian Mounds, nature labels, the Passenger Pigeon Monument and Green Cloud Picnic Shelter are along on Sentinel Ridge Trail.

Bluff Trail to Treasure Cave is open. Take the walkway from Point Lookout (as you are looking at the confluence) to the right. Take a left down the trail to Bluff Trail (through the opening in the rocks). Treasure Cave is on Bluff Trail just below Point Lookout.

Park Admission Stickers

Each vehicle parking in the park must have a vehicle admission sticker. If the office is not staffed, use the self-registration tube just past the drive-up window at the park office. State Park Stickers available now are valid through December 31, 2010.

In addition to state park stickers, a variety of Friends of Wyalusing merchandise, including T shirts, sweatshirts, caps, and books are available and would make a great gifts.
