Wisconsin Whooping Crane Fund

"This is truly one of the greatest restoration projects in wildlife history. It is the wildlife restoration equivalent of putting a man on the moon."

- John Christian, Assistant Regional Director for Migratory Birds, US Fish & Wildlife Service, and former co-chair, Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership

After nearly going extinct just 60 years ago, the whooping crane is making a comeback due to the tremendous efforts of people like you. Thanks to your interest and support, whooping cranes have been released in Wisconsin every year since 2001, and the population is continuing to grow. As of September 2008, approximately 70 whooping cranes comprise the Eastern Migratory Population, with 20-30 birds added each year.

Please help the whooping crane population continue to grow and move closer to delisting from the Federal List of Endangered Species by contributing to the Wisconsin DNR Whooping Crane Fund. Donations are used to monitor and record whooping crane behavior, assess habitat, create whooping crane migration and distribution maps for Partners in other states, conduct aerial surveys, promote whooping crane and wetland education opportunities, and implement the Wisconsin Whooping Crane Management Plan.

Any donation is greatly appreciated. Suggested contribution levels are: $50, $200, $500, $750, and $950. For example, $500 provides a half-day aerial survey. A $950 donation covers the cost of one whooping crane education trunk. Trunks offer hands-on education about whooping cranes, wetlands, and endangered species for students of all ages. Trunks are loaned to teachers, naturalists, and educators free of charge, throughout Wisconsin.
